Take Part: How to Submit

If you have something to share, we would love to hear from you! Please have a look at our mission statement and some of our core values. If this sounds like something you’d like to be a part of, then great! We would love to share your poems, short stories, short non-fiction, art, how-to-guides, and more with other folks. (Please limit prose pieces to around 1000 words.) You do not need any accolades, degrees, or other credentials to be part of this community. We are not interested in any work that promotes racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ageism, ableism, or discrimination of any kind based on class, ability, socioeconomic status, appearance, and/or background (such as addiction or incarceration). We reserve the right to expand this list as needed.

Issue 5: Home (to be released June 2023); submissions open January 15-March 29, 2023

Issue 6: Threshold (to be released December 2023); submissions open August 1 - September 15, 2023

Submission info & detailed timeline

  • No selections are made until after submissions close. This is to ensure everyone has time to submit and to leave space for those who might feel less confident, have less capacity, or who have felt excluded from spaces before.

  • Submissions can be completed work, drafts, concepts, or more general pitches. We aim to let people know if their work will be in the zine by April 3/September 29. You will then have 4 weeks to complete your piece and have it back to us.

  • If you would like editing support, feedback, or anything else that would help prepare your piece, that can be available during those 4 weeks. If possible, please let us know in your submission if this is something you might be interested in so we can make sure we have capacity!

Please email submissions to hello@folkloreforresistance.com and we will get back to you once submissions have closed. Do keep in mind that this is a zine, so space is limited. Please note that priority will be given to those who identify as members of the BIPOC, disability, and/or LGBTQ2S+ community. If you have any questions about submissions, or anything else, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us within or outside of submission openings.

Here are some ideas of things to include in your submission: a photo or description of your art, a synopsis of your submission, especially if it is prose or a how-to-guide, a brief introduction of who you are, with a link to your website if relevant. We can’t wait to hear from you!

A co-operative approach to payment and production

We believe in paying artists fairly for their work! For us, this means that each contributor will be paid an equal share of the zine’s profits, including us. We are both strongly influenced by worker cooperative models and so all contributors will have the zine production costs shared with them throughout the process to ensure transparency for all involved. Also, all contributors will receive two comp copies of the zine! If you have any questions about this at all, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
